Roasted Sweet Potatoes (2004-12-11)

Once the cold season kicks in, roasted sweet potato vendors come out of their summer hibernation.  They often go around residential areas with their little trucks in which sweet potatoes are roasted over red hot stones.  Japanese people love eating them to keep their bodies warm and because these root vegetables are at their best now, they are particularly sweet when roasted.

Japanese sweet potatoes have yellow flesh and drier compared to the orange-flesh and moister variety sold in Australia and US.  And I prefer the latter.  However last week I bought a small piece of roasted sweet potato from a vendor on the spur of the moment.  It was very sweet but a little dry, eating it made me miss the sweet potatoes I used to buy in Sydney.
